Alumni 1998

I applied for the AOSFYC because it was something new to do during the summer and because my choir director recommended that I apply. I had never known anyone who had been in it, and I was pretty scared to go spend 3 weeks with total strangers, but after the first day I knew that I was just being stupid.

On the first day there, I met people who were so friendly and open to meeting new people that I knew I would have a great 3 weeks. On top of that, the music was wonderful. When I got my packet of music and practice tape in the mail, I listened to the tape and I was amazed. I never thought a choir made up of high schoolers could sound like that, but once I arrived, and we practiced together, I heard that we could. The first time we sang "Anthem" in concert I got goose bumps, and when the guys sang "Loch Lomand" at the final concert, I cried. People probably thought I was crazy but I cried my eyes out, because I knew that it would be a long time before I saw most of my fellow choir members again, maybe not ever, and that was sad.

I think about the choir all the time, and it's been 5 years since that summer. I saw one of the guys from the AOSFYC on the news a couple weeks ago, and I was so excited. I also saw another choir member in a musical theater group and it was great to see someone I spent those 3 weeks with doing something so wonderful. I have a lot of pride just to be an AOSFYC alumni, it is something that changed my life and I would recommend it to anyone who loves music and is looking for a new and exciting experience.
