AOSFYC 2003: A day at the Fair ... |
|
|
The more things change ... the more they stay the same, goes the cliché. If you go by the Rhodes Center in the evenings of the Fair, following the last concert, one thing that you will notice right away is that long gone is the stall of telephone lines in the corner of the lawn. As a matter of fact, the four or five public phones at the entrance of the Rhodes Center are also gone ... and now a solitary phone sits there -- unused. But, that's okay, for in their place, you see that the lawn is dotted with choir and band members, calling home from their personal cell phones, telling their parents, friends, brothers and sisters, or significant other(s) about their day, making plans for the next day, and hearing news from home. But, when you go into the dorm, it's the same as it was 10 years ago ... footlockers, clothes hanging on the two long metal bars along the length of the dorm, and people rushing around in the 45 minutes before "lights out." Sure, incremental changes have been made over the years to the dorms -- air conditioning was put in in the early 1990's, layers of fresh coat of paint have been applied, the choir office has more furniture and office equipment than ever ... but the Youth Choir is still the Youth Choir and the experience some of us had 10 years ago is, in essence, the same one that the 2003 AOSFYC experienced during this summer. So, during two days of the Fair experience, the photos in the next pages were taken. To capture what has changed, what has evolved, and what has remained the same. From the bad jokes of the chamois guys to the butter cow to the sky ride, and from the rehearsals in the mornings to the Opus groups ... the familiar is still there and new things are introduced every year. In the following pages, you will see what happens when someone goes trigger happy with a digital camera. This is a somewhat spotty image diary of August 7 and 8, 2003. Enjoy ... and help us label the pictures!!
