Every year the Ohio State Fair becomes a temporary home for hundreds of high school age kids who are selected to perform in the All Ohio State Fair Band and Choir. For three weeks they would be away from friends as the summer comes to a close and they begin preparing for another school year. For three weeks these students needed a way to keep in touch with all that was happening in their respective home towns.

The Online Ohio exhibit quickly went from an opportunity for people to experience the Internet to a testimony that "Generation X" has embraced computer technology and allowed it to enhance their lives.

Almost every day members of the band and choir would appear at the exhibit to check their e-mail and respond to messages sent by friends back home. Two band members from Lorain were in shock after reading an e-mail from a friend telling how she had broken up with her boyfriend. Upon reading the message they responded simultaneously "No way!"

The advancements in the telecommunication industry are changing everyday. The speed of transmitting information is constantly improving. Computers are able to store and process more information. And most importantly, the cost of utilizing these new technologies is growing more affordable. For Lisa Greer, a high school senior from Lorain, that's not important. She just wants to read her e-mail everyday.

"All my friends have Internet e-mail addresses and we are always sending each other messages," she said. "Even though I still use the telephone a lot, I worry that I'll miss something if I don't get a chance to check my mail at least once a day."
